Early in the first decade of the 20th century, Lord Curzon, the then-viceroy of the Indian Empire, paid a visit to Alleppey, now Alappuzha. He was enthralled by the scenic splendour of the location and exclaimed, “Here nature has spent up on the land her richest bounties,” in awe and ecstasy. The presence of a port and pier, crisscross roads and several bridges across them, as well as a long and perpetual sea coast, may have prompted him to make this connection.
