DEPARTMENT

The department of Cardiology at GTDMC Alappuzha started as a division of General Medicine which was led by Dr K Venugopal & blossomed into a distinct department in 1972 under the leadership of Prof Kaimal with a single echo machine & a 2 bedded ICCU. Over the next 5 decades, the department has evolved in infrastructure, academics & services to the needy. The D.M. Cardiology program commenced in the year 2011 with 3 seats  per year at present. The BCVT programme started in 2012, and five well-trained and efficient technicians are graduated each year. In April 2023 the department which was scattered over various blocks of the TDMC hospital building was shifted to the newly built stunning PMSSY block. The department now has 14 bedded ICCU, 9 bedded cath ICU, 30 ward beds, spacious Outpatient block, all in one floor.  It is equipped with state-of-the-art digital cath lab, EP lab with 2D/3D mapping, IABP, IFR/FFR, IVUS, 6 holter analyzer, 7 echo machines, 2 TMT machines in its armamentarium. The department has got dedicated space for the residents and staffs including modern seminar hall with adept projectors and a departmental library with books on various aspects of cardiology. Over 200 adult and pediatric cardiovascular interventions are done per month including angiograms, complex angioplasties, peripheral angioplasties, device closures, BMV, ICD /pacemaker insertion, fistuloplasties, alcohol septal ablations. Over 450 patients are treated in outpatient block every Mondays and Thursdays. Over 100 ICCU admissions are recorded every month since past many years. More than 1200 echoes are being done every month including fetal echo/ contrast echo and Transesophageal echo. The department employs a comprehensive imaging solution to capture, transmit and archive angiographic and echocardiogram images. With a collaborative approach focused on ensuring complete care, round the clock services are provided in the medical and surgical blocks of the hospital.

Daily teaching classes are conducted for DM residents and BCVT students including Case discussions, Journal club, interesting ECGs and topic discussions.

The department is constantly growing in pursuit of perfection and the highest standards in the field of cardiology, with the goal of setting a new benchmark in cardiac care delivery.
